BODY:

To the members of the House Judiciary Committee,

My name is [FULL NAME] and I am from [YOUR ZIP]. I’m asking for your support on HB22-1067 because:

[PLEASE CUSTOMIZE FROM THE BULLET POINTS BELOW]

This is a common sense bill that:

  • closes the legal loophole to ensure Coloradans charged with the lowest level offenses have the same access to justice as those with higher level offenses.

  • will save money to taxpayers and reduce harm to vulnerable communities.

Municipal offenses are:

  • closely tied to homelessness, mental health conditions, and substance use disorders.

  • closely tied to our most vulnerable neighbors.

Jailing  people charged with municipal offenses for up to 6 days:

  • does not improve public safety.

  • can destabilize lives in ways that harm the entire community such as loss of jobs, housing, and child care.

  • can increases risk of suicide and overdose in vulnerable populations.

Thank you for your consideration of supporting HB22-1067. I believe you’ll agree:

  • all Coloradans deserve equal access to justice.

  • HB22-1067 provides thoughtful due process for low-level municipal offenses.
