Tell boulder elected officials:
SB21-062 will save lives while keeping the community safe
“We have seen jail populations fall across the state and the sky has not fallen. We aren’t using our jail facilities to manage homeless and drug addiction, which often compounds the problem. Many of us see that we can have big reductions in jail populations and keep people safe at the same time. That’s good for all Coloradans.”
- Sheriff Joe Pelle
Boulder County, where jail populations fell by 43%
Why is this important?
The majority of the opposition to SB21-062 has come out of Boulder, and much of the criticism is fear-based and inaccurate. Misconceptions, misunderstandings & anger about visible homelessness & petty crimes associated with poverty that some feel would be solved by incarceration have driven opposition to this bill.
Boulder leaders like Mayor Weaver, Sheriff Pelle, and District Attorney Dougherty need to hear from their constituents who support this bill.
Colorado has experienced an 800% increase in our jail population since the 1970s. Sheriff Joe Pelle said that up to 70% of people in Boulder County jail at any one time have a diagnosed mental illness. Mass incarcerations hurt our most vulnerable populations. SB21-062 seeks to reverse Colorado's exploding prison population while protecting public safety.
